Gifts in Wills

A lasting legacy for future generations of people and animals

Leaving a gift in your Will is one of the most significant ways to support Animal-Free Science Advocacy in our ongoing campaigns to end animal experimentation in Australia, whilst ensuring your values and a cause you are passionate about live on.

As a charity with no Government support, our work depends solely on donations and gifts in Wills in order to be able to oppose animal experimentation and to promote humane and scientifically valid non-animal methods. It is only due to recent sizeable gifts  that we have been able to expand our team and we are so grateful for the kind and generous acts which enabled this.

Preparing your Will is an extremely personal matter. It allows you to provide for your family and friends, and an organisation or cause that is close to your heart.

A gift can also be a fitting tribute in memory of a loved pet/companion animal, especially as many dogs, cats, and rabbits are used in experiments each year.

After providing for your loved ones, if you would like to help us continue our valuable work, please also consider a gift to Animal-Free Science Advocacy.

A message from our CEO Rachel Smith

Every gift makes a difference, no matter the size. Leaving a gift in your Will is a way to support a better life for both animals and humans, without any current expense. You can be assured that your future gift will mean that animals in experimentation can continue to benefit from your generosity. Animal-Free Science Advocacy is heavily reliant on gifts in Wills to:

  • Investigate research practices to ensure public scrutiny
  • Develop resources about the dangers of our reliance on animal-based data
  • Promote more humane and scientifically-valid research
  • Implement our campaigns, including calling for an end to primate research and increased transparency in animal research
  • Provide alternatives to dissection in schools

Please let us know if you decide to leave us a gift in your Will, as we would like to keep you up to date with our activities and achievements, to recognise and thank you for your generosity, and of course so that you will know exactly how your contribution will be helping to get animals out of laboratories.

Why leave a gift to Animal-Free Science Advocacy?

Expressed by those who have kindly pledged to leave a gift in their Will and are happy to share the reason why they selected Animal-Free Science Advocacy as a beneficiary:

'Anyone who knows me understands that my love for animals and the natural environment is strong. For this reason, I ask friends, family and acquaintances to donate to charities that will benefit animals and/or the environment somehow. However, I need to lead by example and naturally, I donate money whenever and wherever I can to these causes. As the truth about the use of animals in research is extremely important to me, I have left a gift for Animal-Free Science Advocacy in my will and will be asking all friends and family left behind, to donate to Animal-Free Science Advocacy in lieu of flowers or any other form of expression of grief'.

'I am especially pleased to support Animal-Free Science Advocacy because when I was a school student 60 years ago I was horrified that frogs and rats were dissected in our science classes. The boys were tasked with catching the unfortunate creatures. I still remember the horror of a frog who had each of his four legs pinned down with drawing pins on a board and who was supposedly anaesthetised with chloroform. The memory of that poor frog waking up and trying to lift his legs one by one remains with me to this day. I rescued as many of the collected frogs as I could. To think schools are still allowing students to conduct such ‘experiments’ all these years later is horrifying, because it achieves no purpose. So I am grateful Animal-Free Science Advocacy is encouraging schools to end these sorts of cruel acts. Animal-Free Science Advocacy has a terrific website with the latest information on alternatives to using animals for testing. When next updating my will, I will be certain to include Animal-Free Science Advocacy as a beneficiary.'

'If you are leaving a gift to an organisation that produces suffering in animals, for the ultimate good of humans, it makes no logical sense to me. Why not give a gift to a charity that doesn’t cause any suffering at all? It may produce the same good that you were hoping for, but in the process also doesn’t produce suffering to anyone—animals or humans.'

How to include Animal-Free Science Advocacy in your will

After providing for your loved ones, if you would like to leave a gift to Animal-Free Science Advocacy we recommend you consider using the following suggested wording after discussion with your solicitor. To find a solicitor in your area, you can search the Include a Charity solicitor database.

“I give, free of all duties and taxes, ……% of the residue of my estate / the sum of …… dollars to Animal-Free Science Advocacy Inc (ABN 17 208 630 818), after the payment of all my just debts, funeral and testamentary expenses, for the general purposes of Animal-Free Science Advocacy.  An authorised receipt from Animal-Free Science Advocacy will be a sufficient discharge for the executor(s) or trustee.”

Should you wish to write your Will online, Gathered Here, a leading Australian online Will-writing platform, has partnered with Animal-Free Science Advocacy to offer our valued supporters a free, legally binding Will, with free and unlimited updates for life – which would normally cost hundreds of dollars. Help us bring an end to animal experimentation and create a better world for animals and humans

Thank you for considering the plight of animals in laboratories in your Will.

Animal-Free Science Advocacy gratefully receives donations in lieu of flowers at funerals. Many friends and family members collect donations to direct to medical research, motivated by the desire to find a cure for the condition that has taken the life of a loved one. To respect the values of your loved one and support the vital work of health charities, you may wish to consult the Humane Charities List to ensure that any donations do not fund animal experimentation.
